January has a reputation, and not just because of the weather.


After Christmas, many people notice they feel stiffer, tighter, and less mobile than usual. Neck, back and joint stiffness are especially common at this time of year, even in people who don’t normally struggle.

This is very normal, and usually very fixable.


Why January Stiffness Happens

A few things tend to stack up over December:


1. Less movement

More sitting, more sofa time, fewer daily walks. Joints and muscles like movement — when they don’t get it, they tighten.


2. Cold weather

Cold temperatures reduce blood flow to muscles and soft tissues, making them feel tighter and slower to loosen up.


3. Long periods in one position

Driving, working at laptops, binge-watching TV, sustained postures load the same areas repeatedly.


4. Disrupted routines

Sleep patterns, training habits and work schedules often change over Christmas, and the body feels it.

None of this means something is “wrong”, it just means your body is asking to be used again.
